Custer and the surrounding Black Hills have a lot to do!! This stop combined the best of State and National Monuments that we have come across so far. Custer State Park, Black Hills National Forest, and Bear Butte State Park are all widely recognized recreation areas that incorporate Mt. Rushmore National Monument and the close by Devil’s Tower National Monument, only a short drive into Northeastern Wyoming and well worth the side trip. With all of this to see and do, we have decided to extend our stay here for a full month. We just need to keep a close eye on the weather since it’s getting close to the end of the season. We are staying at the Beaver Lake Campground just outside of Custer (Highly Recommended – 5 Star Campground!!). The first week was Custer State Park, Mt. Rushmore, Hill City, Biking the Mickelson Trail, and Kayaking.

For one weekend, we moved up to the Deadwood / Spearfish Canyon area, and visited the Devil’s Tower and Bear Butte as well.
