Santa Elena Canyon, Big Bend National Park

March, 2020 – – I always thought Big Bend was much like the desert between Odessa and El Paso – mostly empty desert, flat, and very dry. So the Chisos mountains with all the trails and hiking were a real surprise. Big Bend National Park has something for everybody. With the spring rains in early March, the desert blooms. There’s hiking trails through the desert, and tree lined trails up in the mountains. Short level hikes with gorgeous views of the canyons, all the way to multi-day back country trails where you can get lost to the hectic world of cell phones and electronics. We are excited about going back and kayaking or canoeing down the Rio Grande next season.

There is a very nice lodge right in the Chisos mountains if you want to rent a cabin, or they have an adjoining campground for tents and small RV’s. Caution, if you have a larger Class A or trailer, pick one of the lower campgrounds just outside the park in Terlingua. The roads leading up to the lodge have some tight switch backs that are not set up for large RV’s. We have a 37′ trailer, so we stayed in the Big Bend Resort, just west of the park in Terlingua.
